An M22 female spout takes an M22 male aerator or connector directly in most cases, but a gender-changer is needed to fit a female accessory. The adapter presents a male thread out of the female spout.
Do not confuse M22 female with M24 female. They are 2 mm apart and both internal; an M24 aerator will feel loose in an M22 female spout.
