Swapping between an M24 female (internal) and an M22 male (external) tap spout thread uses a small aerator adapter, usually supplied in aerator service kits. Both are fine 27 TPI threads sealing on an internal washer.
If a replacement aerator spins freely and will not seat, the spout is the other gender. M22 male and M24 female look almost identical by eye; check with a caliper.
