These connect directly. 40 mm pond hosetail mates with Jubilee clip size 2A without an adapter.

A 40 mm pond hose over a hosetail measures around 35 to 50 mm outside, so a Jubilee size 2A is the clamp to use. Large hoses need the clip fully over the barbs and firmly tightened because higher flow puts more force on the joint.

On high-flow returns a single clip can creep. Two clips side by side over the barbed length hold a 40 mm hose far more reliably than one over-tightened clip.
